I’m Inspired

I’ve never written a review or testimonial before.  However, I’m inspired to do so now.

If your like me, new to an area, and looking for a new doctor or dentist and loving your previous health care providers, it can be a daunting process.  Especially if you have a complicated medical history..

For me, not only did I find the perfect physician, I’ve found my dream team dental office.  I’m the kind of person that notices and observes what’s around me.  It’s an automatic response .  So, when I arrived for my first visit to Dr. Matt Engel’s office, I felt a sense of comfort. I was greeted by Linda, the front desk person, with the most welcoming smile and disposition.  I liked her right away.  She represents the feel of the whole staff.  As for Dr. Engel, he’s not only knowledgeable and extremely skillful but as kind as the talented staff he has hired!  And there’s one more thing.  The office is pleasantly decorated and centered in a place of serene beauty.  Lots of birds and trees.  I get your not looking for serene beauty but it doesn’t hurt.  If fact it helps!

Recently my husband lost a crown and went for the first time to Dr. Matt (another name Dr. Engel is known by).   He went in the morning and left a couple hours later happy with a new, perfectly fitting crown.

If your looking for a dentist you can’t go wrong, in my opinion, choosing Dr. Matt Engel!  He certainly has done a great job for me!

It Only Takes 20 Minutes A Day

A surefire way to give yourself a little boost every day is to simply take a walk.  According to Active.com, this activity will melt away the pounds, tone your flabby bits and leave you on an emotional high.  It does not require gym membership or a personal trainer. All you need to do is walk.

“Walking is a refreshing alternative to complicated aerobic routines and overpriced gym memberships,” says personal trainer Lucy Knight, author of a book on the exercise.

“It is free, enjoyable and already a part of everyday life. All you need to do is correct your technique: walk faster and for longer and you will lose weight.”

There is much evidence of the benefits of walking. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh recently revealed that overweight people who walked briskly for 30 to 60 minutes a day lost weight even if they didn’t change any other lifestyle habits.

Another American study found that people who walked for at least four hours a week gained less weight (an average nine pounds less) than couch potatoes as they got older. Last year, researchers at the University of Colorado found that regular walking helped to prevent peripheral artery disease (which impairs blood flow in the legs and causes leg pain in one-fifth of elderly people).

Walking can even prevent colds and more.  Researchers at the University of Massachusetts medical school found that people who walked every day had 25 percent fewer colds than those who were sedentary.

Because walking is a weight-bearing exercise, it can also help prevent the bone disease osteoporosis.

“Bones are like muscles in the way that they get stronger and denser the more demands you place on them,” Knight says. “The pull of a muscle against a bone, together with the force of gravity when you walk, will stress the bone — which responds by stimulating tissue growth and renewal.”

Best of all, walking makes you feel good about yourself. “For people suffering from depression, walking three to four times a week for 30 minutes has been shown to enhance their mood,” says Knight.

Spinach Arugula Beet Salad

Try this fun, healthy salad to help ‘beet’ the Winter blah’s….

Spinach Arugula Beet Salad

Tailor the amount of greens based on how many are being served

Fresh organic spinach leaves with stems trimmed

Fresh organic arugula leaves with stems trimmed

4-6 organic beets boiled and cooled

Pistachio nuts shelled and slightly crushed

Goat cheese

1/4 – 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

dash of Dijon

kosher salt and cracked pepper to taste

1 wedge of lemon

1/4 cup champagne vinegar

1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar

1/3 cup of balsamic reduction (can be purchased in variety of flavors)

1-2 TBS of agave nectar

1.  Gently peel off outer layer of skin from the beets.  Slice and lay onto a plate.  Pour the balsamic reduction over beets and let sit for an hour.

2.  When I make my salad dressings I use a small mason jar so that I can really shake it up vigorously without spilling.   In mason jar combine lemon, champagne and balsamic vinegars, olive oil, Dijon and agave.  Shake vigorously and taste.  If balsamic is too tart add more agave.  Add salt and pepper and shake again.

3.  20 minutes before serving, toss the dressing onto the greens.  Place the beets over the top of the salad and garnish with chunks of goat cheese and pistachios.
